CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Recess was Alex’s favorite time of day. She got to play with Milo, swing on the swing set and explore the schoolyard. But school was over for the day, and the schoolyard was quiet.

Sam was picking her up to bring her home. Miss Walker was waiting with her.

She had the picnic table to herself and swung her legs back and forth. It was hard to sit still because tonight Uncle Mark was taking her to the mall for pizza. Then he promised to bring her to Build-a-Bear so she could get Sammiedoodles a new outfit.

She never brought Sammiedoodles to school because that mean ol’ Kaitlyn would take her and throw her on the ground.

Sammiedoodles was her first-ever bear, and she never wanted her to get dirty. Mama never had extra money for dolls or stuffed animals.

Mama—she missed her a lot. A tear slid down her cheek.

Uncle Mark was nice, and so was Sam. She had new friends and clothes that fit. Uncle Mark told her stories of Mama when she was little, and she loved hearing them.

There was no one on the playground. All the after-school kids were having fun in the gym while she sat out here bored.

When would Sam get here? A white car pulled up. Yeah! Finally. Sam was here. Alex got off the picnic table and started running toward the car. The passenger door opened.

“Alex, wait,” shouted Miss Walker.

Alex turned and waved to Miss Walker.

“It’s okay. Sam’s here.”

Alex got to the car and was going to hop in, but something was wrong. Where was her car seat? She should be getting in the back. Sam knew that. She opened her mouth to remind Sam, but to her surprise, the woman wasn’t Sam.

“Hey, Alex, Sam asked me to pick you up and buy you ice cream. Jump in.”

Alex hesitated. Her hand was on the edge of the door.

She didn’t know this person.

Her voice was harsh, mean-sounding. The woman had on big sunglasses and a hat. She smiled, but it wasn’t a nice smile—Stranger Danger.

“I said get in the car, bitch,” the woman hissed. Now she looked mean. Alex turned to head back to Miss Walker, but the woman grabbed her arm.

Miss Walker was screaming at Alex to stop.

Alex knew something was wrong. She wasn’t getting in the car, but the woman was hurting her and not letting go.

She only had a couple of self-defense moves, and they slipped her mind. Not knowing what else to do, she bit the woman’s arm—hard. Latched on until she tasted blood in her mouth. Then jumped back when the woman screamed and let go of her.

The woman cried, “Bitch!” then took off with the door still open and flapping around.

Miss Walker reached her, patted her down and then scooched down.

“Alex, honey, are you all right?”

Alex gulped. “That woman called me a bad name and wanted to take me.”

“I know, honey. I know. You are very brave.”

“I bited her.”

Miss Walker gave her a little smile. “That was very smart of you, Alex.
